NR 501 Significance of Nursing Concepts within the Profession (graded) This discussion considers the metaparadigm of nursing and the four concepts of the nursing profession—person, environment, health and nursing profession. Select a practice area of the nursing profession (i.e. education, executive, informatics, healthcare policy, and advanced clinical practice) and apply EACH of the four concepts to the selected area. Be sure to apply EACH of the four concepts and include an example that demonstrates the application to the practice area. Don’t forget to support your initial posting with scholarly references. Dr. Class The four concepts, person, environment, health and nursing profession of nursing are applicable for use by the advance practice nurse. The nursing concepts provide a foundation for the use of nursing knowledge, practice and theory. An advanced practice nurse can use the concepts to express ways in which patient’s health; environment and nursing practice all interrelate to improve their overall health care safety, quality and delivery. Person, the person concept in the metaparadigm of nursing incorporates the patient, caregivers, family and the patient’s community. As an advanced practice nurse ( APRN) you are not only caring for the patient by addressing the acute or chronic problem but you are educating the patient, family and or caregivers on their disease process and the continuation of care at home. Caring for the person as an APRN incorporates personal meanings specific to the patient. Nursing Profession as related to the metaparadigm of nursing describes the knowledgeable and interpersonal relationship with patients and their respective communities. Nursing profession incorporates structure into practice; structure does not exist without practice (Bender & Feldman n.d.). Structure can be thought of as the nursing process and practice can be implementing those elements of the nursing process in our daily care of patients. Health as related to the metaparadigm refers to the physical and social control over patient’s health and quality of life (Bender & Feldman n.d.). As an APRN we need to determine if when we are providing care are we communicating in a way that is understood by the patient based on his daily habits. Environment as related to the metapardigm refers to the settings in which care is provided by the APRN and the patient’s physical and emotional surroundings in that care. What are our surroundings when providing care? Is it a loud area? Is the family doing most of the talking for the patient? Will the patient and family feel comfortable enough by the APRN’s approach to be honest about their habits? Will the patient understand what they need to do for follow up care? All of these questions can be directly affected by the patient’s environment. Reference Bender, M., & Feldman, M. (n.d). A Practice Theory Approach to Understanding the Interdependency of Nursing Practice and the Environment Implications for Nurse-Led Care Delivery Models. Advances In Nursing Science, 38(2), 96-109. Retrieved from The nursing metaparadigm—person, health, nursing practice, and the environ- ment—defines the nursing profession’s disciplinary focus and forms the basis for nursing knowledge, theory, and practice. Effective nursing-led care delivery models of the future must articulate the ways pa- tients, their health, nursing practice, and the environment interact to improve health care quality and safety. Without an explicit theoretical basis to guide the organization of nursing care delivery to improve patient health, implementation of nursing-led care models will have varied and potentially unpromising outcomes The nursing metaparadigm has been tradi- tionally represented by the following 4 gen- erally agreed upon central concepts: per- son, nursing/caring practice, health, and environment. 6 Person involves not just pa- tients, but their families, caregivers, and communities, 7 and includes the embodied person as well as personal meanings. 8 The nursing/caring practice concept has evolved considerably over time to describe the reflex- ive, interpersonal, knowledgeable, and rela- tional processes between nurses and persons (from patients to communities) that promote healing outcomes. nursing practice constitutes environments of care and how they condition future practice. Practice theory makes explicit that struc- ture is not separate from action; structure does not exist without being enacted through practice. Structure emerges into existence in the interactions between people and things, which have consequences that condition sub- sequent interactions. 9 Health, considered from a nursing rather than medical orientation, con- cerns patients’ health-related quality of life as well as the physical and social determinants of illness and health. 8 The environment is con- ceptualized as the physical surroundings of the patient to include significant others as well as the settings where patients receive their health and nursing care. 3
