ASSIGNMENT 5
SEMESTER 1
2023

, 4. Explain how the disciplines of Linguistics, Anthropology, Archaeology, and
Geography have enhanced history writing on Africa using Great Zimbabwe as
an example

The study of African history has been greatly enhanced by interdisciplinary
approaches, particularly those that incorporate the disciplines of Linguistics,
Anthropology, Archaeology, and Geography. These fields provide critical
tools for understanding the complexities of African societies, cultures, and
histories. One such example is the study of Great Zimbabwe, an ancient city
located in present-day Zimbabwe, which has attracted considerable
attention from scholars across these disciplines. In this essay, I will argue
that the multidisciplinary approach that has been applied to the study of
Great Zimbabwe has significantly contributed to our understanding of its
history and importance.

Linguistics has played a crucial role in enhancing historical writing on
Africa, particularly in the reconstruction of the continent's pre-colonial
languages. The study of the Shona language, which is spoken in Zimbabwe,
has provided valuable insights into the history of Great Zimbabwe.
According to Kusena and Chigudu (2019), the etymology of the name
"Zimbabwe" comes from the Shona word "dzimba dza mabwe," which
means "houses of stone." This linguistic evidence has enabled historians to
reconstruct the cultural and social practices of the people who built Great
Zimbabwe. Furthermore, linguistic analysis has allowed scholars to identify
linguistic connections between the Shona people and their Bantu-speaking
neighbors, which provides insights into the broader cultural and historical
context of the region.

Moreover, the interdisciplinary approach to studying Great Zimbabwe
has not only provided insights into the past but has also contributed to
contemporary debates on the representation and interpretation of African
history. The use of multiple disciplinary perspectives has challenged
traditional narratives that portrayed African societies as primitive and
uncivilized, and has provided a more balanced and nuanced portrayal of
African history. Additionally, the interdisciplinary approach has
