Population - Answer- The collection of all measurements to data that are being considered. Ex. All 38 million carbon monoxide detectors in the United States. Sample - Answer- A sub-collection from a population. Ex. THe 30 carbon monoxide detectors that were selected and tested. Parameter - Answer- Numerical measurement describing a characteristic of an entire population. Statistic - Answer- numerical measurement describing a characteristic of a sample. Quantitative Data - Answer- Also called numerical data consists of numbers representing counts of measures. Collected as single numerical answers on surveys. Ex. Weight, # of pets, hours of sleep per night. Quantitative Datsa Type and Levels - Answer- Types: Discrete, continuous Levels: Interval, Ratio Discrete Data - Answer- When the number of possible answers values is either a finite number of a countable number. The number of possible values is 0,1,2,3... Ex. Number of eggs a hen lays. The number of car accidents. Number of people who vote. Continuous Data - Answer- Result from infinity many possible values that correspond to some continuous scale that covers a range of values without gaps, interuptions, or jumps. Ex. Height a tree grows in a year. Weight of a football player. Qualitative Data - Answer- Data that consists of categories, names, labels. The data is always collected on surveys as multiple choice.
