• Your ability to focus on the core aspects of the topic.
• Your ability to write in a clear and concise manner.
Paragraphs less than the required limit will not be marked. Please do your best
you show a good understanding
1. In your own words, explain why “the colonial government in Haiti
introduced apartheid style legislation which discriminated against free
coloured and black people in order to keep them in their place”. a. Was
this a justified move? Briefly explain your stance.
The white population was very concerned about the rise of free blacks and
coloured people since the latter group's economic power (lower class)
threatened their racial identity, political influence, and social privileges. As a
result, free coloured people and black people are gradually growing more
strong. To put free coloured’s and blacks in their place, the colonial authority
enacted laws with apartheid-style discrimination. These laws were ratified by
a parliament. This cannot be justified because it must be acknowledged right
away that apartheid was an exceptional instance of overt racism.

2. In your own words, explain why the events in Haiti showed that
Europeans were not necessarily prepared to extend these new ideals to
non-white people. a. What are those ideals? What are the reasons for the
above-mentioned notion?
The new ideas of "liberty, equality, and brotherhood" were not necessarily
something that the Europeans were ready to convey to those whom they
perceived as inferior and backward. The same Europeans who supported the
radical calls for the equality of all people frequently accepted without
hesitation that some racial or ethnic groups, such as Africans, had to be
excluded from the new brotherhood of free citizens because they did not
possess the necessary qualifications for freedom.

3. In your own words, explain Napoleon III’s steps in the progressive
liberalisation of his empire. Pg. 101 a. What are reasons behind these
changes?
