November Exam 2021
, 1) A correctional official's principal responsibility is to keep criminals in prison
and to ensure that they participate in rehabilitation programs as specified in
their sentence plans. The Department of Correctional Services places great
value on offenders' safety and security. "Custody" refers to the level of
immediate control exercised over criminals to ensure that the correctional
facility runs smoothly and orderly (Hepburn 1989:191; Allen & Simpson
1998:450; Luyt 1996:6).
This means that the public must be protected from escapes or possible
escapees, that employees and visitors must be protected from offenders'
hostile behaviour, and that offenders must be protected from each other and
themselves (Cornelius 2001:24). The goal of the Department of Correctional
Services indicates that correctional officials must play an effective correcting
and encouraging role in prisons, therefore this is an oversimplification of their
activities and obligations.
The primary responsibility of the correctional official is to maintain order in the
prison or in the community. To do this, the correctional official oversees
numerous core functions, each of which has its own set of responsibilities.
Basic functions and essential responsibilities can get entwined because one
influences the way the others are carried out, but each is handled separately.
As a Correctional officer, I must execute the following essential
responsibilities in a jail to achieve my principal purpose, which is to control:
• functions of safety and security
• the functions of human dignity
• functions of physical care
• roles of therapy and development
I will ensure that Mr G is treated with dignity by ensuring that he gets the
proper clothing, gets to eat, is able to get the medical care that he needs and
is treated with respect.
