Vanwege het normatieve karakter van het werk ligt het voor de hand dat social workers een
beroepscode in acht nemen. Een beroepscode bevat vastgelegde waarden en normen van een
beroep die als leidraad dienen voor een goede beroepsuitoefening. Deze code maakt deel uit van de
beroepsethiek, wat wil zeggen dat het geheel van waarden en normen die het handelen van een
beroepsgroep stuurt of zou moeten sturen.
De internationale beroepscode is in 2004 aangevuld met een heriene beginselverklaring. Hierbij
wordt aangesloten bij zeven bekende, internationaal geaccepteerde humanitaire verdragen en
