a deep analysis of the character of Mr Utterson in Jekyll and Hyde. Main quotes about him and by him

Content preview

Mr. Utterson: presented as a reliable and trustworthy character through the initial
description, this is significant because he is the narrator of the story and the reader
learns about the events through his perspective. His profession as a lawyer adds to this
idea by letting the reader know that he is a professional and knows how to handle
mysterious situations to an extent, and he’s familiar with crime. He also is a respected
gentleman of society and is loyal to his friends. He is rather tolerative of others’
mistakes and chooses to ignore them at times, contrastingly, he is quite strict with
himself. He feels responsible for his friends and cares about them, Jekyll in this case so
much that he crosses his own boundaries to ensure his safety by revealing the mystery
surrounding Hyde. He fits in with the idea of a Victorian gentleman. He lives morally,
respectably and religiously. Unlike Hyde, he cares about his public appearance. He has
a close friendship with Jekyll and Lanyon, and he acts as a bound between the two.
