Unit 5 – Meeting Individual care needs
Learning Aim A

Explain the importance of promoting equality and diversity for individuals with
different needs.

Equality means fairness and justice in the health and social care sector. This means
that everyone is entitled to equal access to any service when needed and that they
should get the high–quality care they deserve, no matter where they live or how they
live their lives. (Bartleby research, 2019) Equality is about ensuring everyone is given
equality of opportunity and nobody is treated unfairly. For example, ensuring that
there are wide corridors and access for individuals in a wheelchair when accessing
health and social care services such as having a lift. In addition, another example of
equality is treating all staff and suppliers fairly, this suggests that everyone should be
treated fairly despite their age, race, or disability.

Diversity means valuing differences between people and groups of people and
placing a positive value on those differences. (Union Learn, 2020). Diversity
recognises that all individuals are different, and the many distinct parts of an
individual's character and identity make them unique. Diversity includes valuing and
recognising differences in age, appearance, ability, health, gender, sexual
orientation, beliefs, values, culture, and race. Provide person-centered care and
work in a non-judgemental manner. Employees should be encouraged to value
diversity and respect the attributes that make people different. Care plans should be
personalised to reflect the likes, dislikes, personal history, and beliefs of everyone.

One reason equality and diversity are important to promote is to ensure equal
access to opportunities. This ensures that people are valued and have the same
access to all opportunities whatever their differences. Equality and diversity are
promoted in Patrick's case study. Patrick and his partner James both tested positive
for HIV and have consulted their local G.P (General Practitioner) who will work with
them to produce a treatment plan. The G.P is promoting equality and diversity as
Patrick had equal access to all opportunities. This is because the G.P identifies
opportunities to help patients from disadvantaged backgrounds to manage their
health. Furthermore, the G.P does not judge Patrick and James despite them being
homosexual and considers their social and physical environment and advises them
with the treatment best suited to them and their lifestyle.

Another reason equality and diversity are important to promote is to create an
inclusive culture for all individuals. This means providing everyone with equal access
to opportunities and resources. Equality and diversity are promoted in Alice’s case
study. Alice is 74 and recently lost her husband due to cancer Alice is an alcoholic
and tends to waste her pension on her habit. Alice consulted her G.P after the advice
of her manager as he was concerned about the effects the anti-depressants are
having on her. The G.P is creating an inclusive culture for all individuals as Alice has
equal access to all opportunities. This is because the G.P identifies different

opportunities that could help Alice as he transferred her to a nutritionist.
Furthermore, the G.P does not discriminate against her as she may smell bad
because of drinking a lot of alcohol, they also advised her on the treatment best
suited for her and her lifestyle.

Another reason equality and diversity are important to promote is to treat all
individuals fairly. This means to treat everyone with respect and to respect
everyone's wishes and needs also to make sure everyone is treated fairly. Equality
and diversity are promoted in Marie’s case study. Marie is 34 and living with her 96
years old mother who has dementia. Marie is her mother's full-time carer. Marie does
not get enough sleep and has asked her G.P for sleeping tablets but she is
becoming dependent on those. The G.P is promoting to treat all individuals fairly as
he suggests getting social workers involved to get her mother placed in a care home
as Marie has said no, they have then decided to put in place a social worker to help
Marie and her mother and work around their needs. Furthermore, the G.P does not
force Marie into something she does not want to do they respect her wishes and
work around it to still offer help and support.

Analyse the impact of preventing discrimination for individuals with different
needs.

The meaning of discrimination is an action that is often based on a person’s negative
attitude towards others. (skillsforcare 2022) It also means the unjust or prejudiced
treatment of different categories of people, especially based on age, race, sex, or
disability. An example of discrimination is when a woman is paid less than a man for
doing the same job.

The 4 types of discrimination are Unfair discrimination, Direct discrimination, Indirect
discrimination, and positive discrimination. Unfair discrimination is when a person is
treated unfairly compared with someone else. For example, when someone is not
considered for a job because they are older than another candidate, despite having
the same qualifications and experience. Direct discrimination is when someone is
rude, hostile, or offensive to someone because they see them as being different. For
example, when someone who is overweight is called names. This form of
discrimination is easy to prove because it is heard or witnessed by other people.
Indirect discrimination is harder to prove. For example, a manager may appear to be
supportive and friendly towards a member of staff but may show disrespect for their
ideas dismissing them in a jokey way. Positive discrimination is when a decision is
made in an Individual’s favour because there is something different about them. For
example, when a service has few people from the ethnic minority at a certain level,
they appoint someone from that ethnic minority. (Billingham, M. 2014)

One effect of discrimination is that it can lower an individual's self-esteem and make
them doubt themselves, this makes them lose confidence, this also leads to them
staying away from people and socialising less. For example, not socialising in school
or college keeping away from people and just being alone. A case study that links to
this is Nusrat’s case study. If discrimination were prevented one way, it would
