Fall 2016 Assignment Instructions

The University allows late registration for Summer 2016 courses until 5 pm, on Friday, August 26,
2016. Registering after any course has met for an entire week puts students at a serious disadvantage
for completing course work effectively.
Missing even one class during the session puts students at a serious disadvantage. Students need to
get transportation and personal issues under control. Every absence counts and will be penalized
either by withdrawal from the course or a 30-point deduction from the course final grade.

Every student registered for my Fall 2016 Tuesday/Thursday sections will be held to the policies
below.

Students who miss two classes for any reason during the Fall 2016 semester will be dropped from the
section.

Students cannot switch sections after the course has met for the first time.

Students registered for my sections before the first day of class, August 23, 2016, must attend the
entire first class on August 23 and the entire second class on August 25, 2016, or they will be
dropped from the section.

Students who register for the section after the class has met for the first time, but before the class has
met for the second time, must attend the entire second class on August 25, 2016, or they will be
dropped from the section.

Students who register after the class has met two times (August 23 and August 25, 2016) must attend
the entire class on August 30, 2016, or they will be dropped from the section.

Whenever you miss class or come late regularly, you put yourself in a difficult position. It is
unacceptable for students (and employees in the workplace) to miss assigned days for reasons other
than emergencies. Bad planning does not constitute an emergency; planned vacations do not
constitute an emergency. Official, original documentation must be submitted to me before I will even
consider allowing any student to make up a missed assignment or, more important, remain in the
course.

This packet contains information designed to help you effectively complete many BCOM 3950
assignments. These assignments are in addition to the required reading, exercises and quizzes you
must complete on Connect. If you review this information, apply the explanations provided in class,
follow the principles described in the textbook, and take advantage of peer review, you will improve
your performance on these assignments.
You will submit most assignments to a designated iCollege Dropbox. Pay careful attention to the
name of the Dropbox so that you put your files in the right place. Letters, memos and other materials
submitted to iCollege must be in one of the following formats: doc, docx, pdf, or rtf.
The assignments are due AS NOTED in the syllabus and on iCollege. If changes are necessary, they
will be announced in class and on iCollege. As the semester progresses, you are responsible for
knowing and noting any changes in the schedule that are made.

Description
THIS ASSIGNMENT HAS THREE PARTS – 1) A RECORDED INTRODUCTION OF YOURSELF, 2) A WRITTEN MEMO ON
THE VIDEOS YOU ARE ASSIGNED TO OBSERVE, AND 3) AN UPDATED, IMPROVED RECORDED INTRODUCTION.

Part One: Digital Introduction Recording
Say who you are and concisely state your career-related aspiration.
Look for ways to describe yourself to show that you are competent, caring, and have good character—what
the textbook says contributes to credibility.
Format Advice
• Greet the audience with a simple statement that explains your purpose.
• Include a few memorable examples of your essential skills and attributes, with the most
important first. Remember, your educational achievements rarely warrant top billing.
• Let viewers know how to contact you (The most effective way is to add text to the video
in postproduction. A second option is to display a card with the contact information.)
• End by telling the audience you look forward to meeting them.

Content Advice
NOTE: The advice below is intended to help you make a list of relevant ideas. You cannot include
something from every category. Pick the most effective examples for the specific audience.
However, keep your lists of ideas from each category so you can easily create new introductions
whenever new opportunities arise.
• Make sure the introduction is factual, concise and interesting.
Facts will pertain to your college major, relevant work or internship experience, languages spoken,
and specific marketable skills, such as proficiencies in software, organizational and specific
communication skills, sales abilities, or skills acquired from school sports teams.
Awards, leadership roles, and life experiences could make you valuable to employers. Select the
traits and abilities that set you apart from the crowd—in a positive way.
