Presentation on animal testing
Hello everyone and thank you for joining me. Today i will be discussing why animal testing
should be banned. For many years scientists have tested new products such as: shampoo,
lotion, cosmetic and medical products on animals for safety. These tests can harm the
animals due to the extensive use of lethal chemicals used and may even kill them. For
instance 3.8 million animals are being tested in the UK alone, this is around 1 animal every 8
seconds. Right now millions of mice, rats, rabbits, primates, cats, dogs and other animals
are locked inside claustrophobic barren cages, languishing in pain, and suffering from
extreme frustration. After enduring a life of suffering, isolation and terror almost all of them
will be killed. Is a lifetime of agony necessary? Animal experimentation is an inhumane
practice which is made unnecessary due to the alternatives modern technology has created
in replacement of animal testing.
Firstly, the beauty and cosmetic industry is a rapidly growing sector in the world. According
to a recent survey an average woman in Britain will spend around £10,000 on makeup in her
lifetime. With so much money being spent on cosmetics and with it being so popular you
would think that all companies would follow the better devised ways of testing their products
which are cruelty free. However, you are wrong! Although some brands like: Lush, Two
Faced, Smashbox, Elf, Dove etc.. are cruelty free, according to a global report 80% of the
world still allows cosmetics to be tested on animals. Meaning that brands like: Nars, L’Oreal,
Estee Lauder, Mac etc… still test on animals and who don’t keep in mind the consequences
of their actions as many uninformed customers continue to buy their products without
realising the impact it causes to defenceless animals who can only sit and wait for the next
painful procedure to be performed on them. Although it is vital that products are tested for
safety, it is not justified to use animals for this purpose when there are alternative ways that
don’t harm the animals.
Secondly, using animals for biomedical research is a much more conflicting discussion.
Many people believe that animals are inferior to humans , so shouldn't have the rights that
allow them to be excused from animal testing, when it is more important for humans to be
safe. Those in favour of animal testing argue that animals are vital to help advance medical
and biological research which creates more breakthroughs for human kind, allowing us to
discover better and more effective treatments. Those against animal testing contend that the
benefit for humans doesn’t justify the harm to animals. Around 5 million animals are used
across the Eu for the purpose of medicines and vaccinations, each year. As well as the pain
and distress the scientific procedures cause, these animals will also suffer from symptoms of
the disease or condition being studied and will then just be killed after being used. The
RSPCA believe that the need to experiment on animals and the justification of the suffering
caused should be more critically questioned for example: ‘How important is the problem
being studied’ and ‘How likely is it that the research will succeed?’ to avoid unnecessary
harm that may come to these animals.
Thirdly, avoidable, painful experiments are being used in the food industry. The companies
that test on animals cause these helpless, vulnerable animals to be force fed to obesity,
exposed to radiation and have the surgical implantation of tubes. Imagine being in such a
merciless living situation, and prolonged suffering that you develop neurotic types of
behaviour for example: spinning in circles, rocking back and forth, pulling out your own fur
