During the 19th France experienced many changes that affected many
countries like Egypt and other European countries. Following essay will be
focusing on the characteristics and the elements of colonialism and
imperialism including how did the French occupy Egypt in a short period of
time and lastly, the aim of the French occupation of Egypt.
Colonialism is defined as “control by one power over a dependent area or
people”. It occurs when one nation subjugates another, conquering it
population and exploding its often while forcing its own language and cultural
values upon its people. The world 19th century was dominated by empires
whose territories stretched across vast distances and which were inhabited by
population groups of diverse cultural linguistic and religious background. From
the late 19th century many Europeans and political necessity in order to
safeguard the other great powers. The colonialism was characterized by
political and legal domination over an alien society, cultural inequality
exploitation between imperial powers and the colony also well as relations of
economics and political dependence. In strategic terms, French control of Egypt
could be used to threaten commercial interests in the region and block
Britain’s overland route. The French army landed in Egypt near Alexandria at
the mouth of the Nile. Although the city was fortified, it quickly fell to the
French. The aim was to take control of the Egypt, from Alexandria Napoleon’s
troops marched on to conquer the whole of upper Egypt and to bring the
Enlightment to the Orient.
During the 1880s the European powers entered powers entered a heated
phase of expansion and they competed with one another to acquire new
colonial possessions. French occupied Africa, the so called “scramble for
Africa” saw the increasing intrusion of Germany, Italy and European countries.
An important aspect of this is that colonial empires started to exchange
territories as part of political bargains by the late 19th century. It is clear that
imperialist power can reach beyond the occupation of colonial territories. The
British were able to dominate the economies of states which they did not need
to conquer in the 19th century. Many South American countries and many
states in Asia were penetrated by British commerce. For a variety of reasons,
the trend towards informal empires was reversed in the 1870s.
