approach to manage change in an organisation. Apply the change model of
John Kotter to the change process focused on safety that was initiated and
lead by Ms Cynthia Carroll as CEO of Anglo American plc for the period 2007
to 2013. In your answer, you need to explain each step of Kotter’s model and
then explain the application thereof to the case study.

John Kotter developed an eight-step model for leading change in an organization.
These steps are:

1. Establishing a sense of urgency
2. Creating a guiding coalition
3. Developing a vision and strategy
4. Communicating the change vision
5. Empowering others to act on the vision
6. Creating short-term wins
7. Consolidating gains and producing more change
8. Anchoring new approaches in the organization's culture

Applying Kotter's model to the safety change process initiated and led by Ms Cynthia
Carroll as CEO of Anglo American plc for the period 2007 to 2013:

a) Establishing a sense of urgency: Ms Carroll recognized the importance of
safety in the mining industry and the need to reduce accidents and fatalities.
She communicated this urgency to the company's employees, shareholders,
and stakeholders.
b) Creating a guiding coalition: Ms Carroll formed a safety task force that
included members from all levels of the organization, including senior
executives, middle managers, and frontline employees. This group was
tasked with developing and implementing safety policies and procedures.
c) Developing a vision and strategy: The safety task force developed a vision for
safety in the company and a strategy for achieving that vision, which included
a focus on risk management, safety training, and employee engagement.
