CHEM 162 Experiment 5: Spectrochemical Series Complete Solution 2023. Part A: Preparation of cis-Bis(glycinato)copper(II) monohydrate, Cu(gly)2 ·H2O mass CuSO4 ·5H2O g mass NH2CH2CO2H (glycine) g molar mass CuSO4 ·5H2O g/mole moles CuSO4 ·5H2O moles molar mass NH2CH2CO2H (glycine) g/mole moles NH2CH2CO2H (glycine) moles limiting reagent is molar mass Cu(gly)2 ·H2O g/mole (Note for molar mass: each glycine loses the acidic proton in order to be a bidentate ligand) mass Cu(gly)2 ·H2O expected based on limiting reagent g mass Cu(gly)2 ·H2O recovered g % Yield % 0.5070 0.2450 249.68 0. 75.070 0. Glycine 229.66 0. 92. 0.3470 Discuss your % yield. It is high or low? What are the contributing factors to this high or low % yield? The % yield is relatively low. Some contributing factors to this relatively low % yield is that there was a lot of excess of sodium bicarbonate. This would make the mass of the Copper (II) Glycine hydrate smaller than it should be. Other than this, the reaction might not have been completed therefore the reactants might have been remained. Also during when filtering, there could be some of the precipitate that was lost therefore the % yield was not 100% and some of the product was lost into the solution. Furthermore, there might be some other reactions that produces other products which would reduce the yield of the one that is being calculated.
