Samenvatting artikel Epstein “What makes a good parent?

Bij het opvoeden lijken we naar drie aspecten te kijken: wat onderzoek ons adviseert, wat echt blijkt
te helpen en wat ouders daadwerkelijk doen.

We kennen tien competenties waaraan ouders zouden moeten voldoen bij het opvoeden: The
Parents’ Ten. Het meest belangrijke wat ouders ook toegeven, is het geven v. affectie (liefde) aan het
kind.

The Parents’ Ten:
1. Liefde en affectie
2. Stress
3. Relatievaardigheden
4. Autonomie en onafhankelijkheid
5. Onderwijs en leren
6. Levensonderhoud: goede baan, zorgt voor goede toekomst v.h. kind
7. Gedragsmanagement: goed gebruik van straf en andere methoden.
8. Gezondheid
9. Religie
10. Veiligheid

Hoe meer onderwijs en hoe hoger de opleiding waaraan ouders hebben deelgenomen, hoe beter de
opvoeding blijkt te zijn.

Ouderschap is te leren. Ouders die hebben deelgenomen aan opvoedklassen, blijken betere
resultaten te laten zien met hun kinderen, dan ouders die deze trainingen hebben afgewezen.

Ouders die zich te veel richten op de veiligheid v. hun kind, zullen negatieve gevolgen zien, zoals een
ongelukkig kind.
