Discuss what is meant by the following:
Democracy
Democracy is a democratic political system which has evolved from ancient democracy (Du
Plessis, 2018:55). In democracy, all citizens, regardless of gender, race, or social class, are
included; individual and civic aspects of citizenship are not “mutually exclusive” (linked in
such a way that one excludes or prevents the other), but mutually beneficial; and citizens
take an active role in implementing societal change (Du Plessis, 2018:55). Democracies can
be representative or active and participative (Du Plessis, 2018:55). A representative
democracy is where citizens vote for or elect an official to represent them within the
government and an active and participative democracy is that in which citizens actively
engage in their societies as agents for change and development (Du Plessis, 2018:55).
