Unit 2, Learning Aim D assignment
Introduction and Context:
Overall, to successfully complete the unit 2 practical scientific procedures and techniques, I have
completed a significant amount of study and experimentation. I have gained various skills in this
unit which will be useful when applying to universities as they have given me more independence
and confidence in conducting practical work. I have completed the practical titration, colorimetry,
calorimetry, and chromatography. The practical’s had required me to use prior knowledge, e.g.,
safety, when conducting the experiment. I had to learn many other skills in order to conduct the
experiments independently and accurately.

Summary of Skills and Competencies
Skill/Competency 1 Calibrating Equipment
Learning Aim (s) (A.B or C) Learning Aim A
that this skill/competency
developed in
Previous Haven’t had any previous knowledge or experience in calibrating
experience/knowledge of equipment.
this competency

How this skill/competency I have developed this skill in my Unit 2A. E.g., In Learning Aim A, the
have been developed during glass pipette had to be calibrated in order to get accurate results. There
Unit 2 should be no other types of chemicals inside as it could affect our
results, so calibration is very important in this learning aim. Another
example is calibrating the mass balance this had to be calibrated
accurately for the glass pipette to be calibrated.

Has this skill been This skill has also been used in Unit 2B, as we had to calibrate a
transferred to other parts of thermometer in order to see which one is best for the experiment and
Unit 2, and if so how can provide accurate results in the experiment. We would be using
percentage error equation to calculate which thermometer has the least
percentage error

Judgment about level of skill As we had started doing the calibration part of the experiment, I was
for this skill/competency not confident at calibrating the equipment without help from my teacher
or help from other classmates. As I kept doing it again and practicing
getting the calibration part more accurate, I had improved a lot and was
able to do it successfully. I was more confident at calibrating in Unit 2B
as I had learnt the skills from Unit 2A.
Comparison of level of skill Me and my partner were not that confident in the beginning, but we had
in this skill/competency to lots of support from peers and teachers to help us develop this skill
others successfully.

What needs improving and I need to improve on calibrating accurately, as my calculations were not
how to improve this correct at the start. I had improved this from the help of classmates and
teachers, and I was able to learn how to do the calculations and how to
accurately calibrate it.

, Skill/Competency 2 Drawing tangents to graphs to work out rate of change
Learning Aim (A.B or C) that Learning Aim B
this skill/competency
developed in
Previous I have some knowledge about tangents from GCSE Maths.
experience/knowledge of
this competency

How this skill/competency I have developed this skill in Unit 2, e.g., by learning how to draw
have been developed during tangents on graphs, we needed do at least 3 tangents on a graph and
Unit 2 work out the rate of cooling for each of them.

Has this skill been This skill has not been transferred to other parts of Unit 2.
transferred to other parts of
Unit 2, and if so how
Judgment about level of skill I was very confident at drawing the tangents onto the graphs as I had
for this skill/competency understood it easily and I had practiced a lot on it in lesson.

Comparison of level of skill My partner was also very confident and good at this skill. We both had
in this skill/competency to helped other classmates whenever they needed help drawing the
others tangents.
What needs improving and I believe I don’t need to improve on as I had accurately drawn tangents
how to improve this and I’m confident in drawing them.

Skill/Competency 3 Making Extracts
Learning Aim (A.B or C) that Learning Aim C
this skill/competency
developed in
Previous I have no previous knowledge of this skill, as I have not made extracts
experience/knowledge of before.
this competency

How this skill/competency I have developed this skill in Unit 2, as I have learnt how to successfully
have been developed during make extracts. I had used a pestle and mortar to grind up some type of
Unit 2 leaf and had added a chemical into (propanone), for it to grind up
properly. We have to grind it up until a green liquid comes and if to
dilute, we won’t be able to see it as clear it will be very faint. So, it
needs to be very pigmented in order to see the clear, separated spots.

Has this skill been This skill has not been transferred to other parts of the unit.
transferred to other parts of
Unit 2, and if so how
Judgment about level of skill I was very confident in making these extracts as it was very simple for
for this skill/competency me to do and when applying the extract on to the chromatography
paper, I have had good rf values and clear, pigmented spots. This had
helped me calculate rf values easily and the pigments were easy to
identify.
