What is making them anxious Mild anxiety This first level of anxiety occurs in the normal experience of everyday living and allows people to perceive reality in sharp focus. Moderate anxiety The client is having increased stress, use shorter questions, direct instructions Severe/panic level acute high anxiety, difficult to talk with them self-harm risk Benzodiazepines are used for acute severe anxiety, and in alcohol detoxification for withdrawal symptoms What are benzodiazepine examples? Alprazolam (Xanax), lorazepam (Ativan), Chlordiazepoxide (Librium) Can you take a benzodiazepine if you are pregnant? no Are benzodiazepines addictive? yes, and require supervision during detox as the client is as risk for seizures and death. What is PTSD caused by? experiencing a traumatic event or prolonged stress or abuse. What are symptoms of PTSD? Flashbacks-reliving the experiences while conscious, Nightmares, can be triggered by a similar event, experience, person, circumstance, etc. What is the treatment for PTSD? Combination of medications and therapy What is systematic dessensitization? Client learns to relax when confronted by anxiety producing triggers.
