What are the reasons for taking selfies?

, Does photo-taking amplify or dampen enjoyment of experiences?

• Study where they had two groups of people – asked one group to take pictures and asked
one not to

• Participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions in a 2 (Photo-Taking: yes
vs.no) x 2 (Experience Type: bus tours vs. concerts).

• Experiences are vital to the lives and well-being of people.

• Taking photos enhances enjoyment of positive experiences especially when photo-taking
increases engagement with the experience.

• This is not the case when the experience is already highly engaging, or when photo-taking
interferes with the experience.

• Photo-taking directs greater visual attention to aspects of the experience one may want to
photograph (an engagement-based process).

• Greater engagement due to photo-taking results in worse evaluations of negative
experiences.

Who Posts Selfies?

Sorokowska et al., 2016

• The authors studied the association between selfie posting and various personality traits.

• Selfie taking is popular among males and females, but women post more own, partner, and
group selfies than men.

• Extraversion and social exhibitionism positively predict frequency of selfie posting.

Bojan et al., 2017

• The authors studied individual differences in selfies.

• Male selfies generally include the head positioned around the centre of the picture, with
very few expressions or body/head positions.

• Female selfies are less homogeneous and generally more expressive in the matter of head
position, exhibition of the face, tilting of the head and mood expression.

• Do your selfies follow this pattern?
