NURS - 6630N; PMH Nurse Practitioner Role I: Child and Adolescent
Introduction Voluntary commitment is when a patient admits themselves to any psychiatric facility or any mental health hospital voluntarily without seeking for anyone to give them the consent while involuntary commitment is a situation where a client is free to leave the healthcare facility against the medical advice. When a client is admitted to a healthcare facility involuntarily is when a client is deemed danger to self and to other by a provider, psychotic symptoms, cannot keep self-safe, and complete the usual routine or basic daily activities while voluntary admission is when the client signs him/himself into a hospital for treatments. The role of a Psychiatrist Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is to review individual cases and determine if the client is eligible for involuntary commitment through assessing different aspects and guidelines which are used to determine if the client is a candidate for any commitment. Some of the guidelines are used depending the individual states. After reviewing the scenario case study for this week, the 14-year old male should be committed to receive treatments voluntarily. According to the scenario, the both parents are the legal representative and care make medical decision legally. If discharged from the hospital without proper treatment based on the assessment, it will not be a safe discharge and there will be a chance the client might harm himself or others. It is the best interest of the client to be committed and get the treatments that he needs so he will not harm himself or others when they discharge him. For the provider to provide a holistic approach for the care needed by the client, the client has to voluntarily commit to receiving a comprehensive psychological assessment. The commitment will let the provider to provide a comprehensive assessment to assess the client current situation so for this case study I will recommend involuntary commitment.
