I got an 8.2 for this course. There has been a chosen between essay 1, 2 and 3 and the chosen one is assessed together with essay 4. I don't know which one is chosen, so I can say very little about that. By the way, I would also like to thank my teacher for the feedback during the lessons, without her help, I would not have achieved this grade.

Essay #1 – 475 words

, Fleeing from danger to arrest under suspicion of terrorism

The injustice that migrants face when they flee for their lives is immense. Three
teenagers who left Libya and attempted to reach Europe were accused of
hijacking the ship they were on. To this day, they are still trying to prove their
innocence for not having committed such a serious crime. This essay intends to
highlight the misfortune faced by the El Hiblu three and the injustice of the
Maltese law system.

The El Hiblu three consists of Lamin, Abdul and Abdalla. The three teenagers
were trying to calm down the horrors facing migrants on the boat that was
returning to Libya. The oil tanker was on route from Turkey to Libya and the
captain promised the migrants, after having spoken with the trio, to bring them
to Malta. On the way, the captain told the Maltese authorities that he was not in
control of his ship and blamed the teenagers. On arrival, the trio were arrested
under suspicion of terrorism in hijacking the ship.

A story similar to the El Hiblu three is the Senegalese teenager Mousa who was
on his way to Italy and was accused of people smuggling soon after he crossed
the Mediterranean Sea. Or the story of Cheikh Sene, who was also accused of
helping smuggle people when arriving in Italy, while trying to save people from
drowning. Neither of these stories could be called unique, they happen much
more often than they should.

All the people who fled from Libya were brought back to an unsafe declared land.
While under international maritime law, it is necessary to bring the people you
rescue to a safe place. Another international law gives you the right to speak in
court and give your account of what happened. But the El Hiblu three did not
have that right in court, while it has not yet been proved that they hijacked the
ship. Furthermore, one has the right to have a speedy trial by law, but the
lawyer of the El Hiblu three points out the fact that the trial may take years
before it is taken to trial. The injustice to the El Hiblu three faced because of the
Maltese law system is huge, the Maltese have overreacted in using the charge of
terrorism in this case.
