different agencies.
According to the health foundation, people who live in places with high levels of
unemployment, issues with housing and lack of public transport struggle to live a healthy
lifestyle. This can affect their physical, intellectual, emotional, mental and social health. One
of the main problems in health and social care is the lack of co-ordination between services.
This affected service users because they were dealing with different agencies at the same
time and be given information repeatedly. This showed that services did not meet the
specific needs for individuals. Over the last few years, there has been an improvement for
services to make the system more efficient and cost effective.
The NHS is now divided into a series of organisations that function at a local and national
level. The structure of the NHS England is as follows:
The Department of Health (DoH)
The department of health and social care main role is to assist people to live more
independently and maintain a healthy and long life by encouraging people to take on
activities, behaviours and attitudes which leads to improved health and well-being. The
department is responsible for overall strategies, funding and all health and social care
systems with and through its 28 agencies and public bodies. DoH ensures the supply of
appropriate health and social care services, in both clinical settings such as hospitals and
G.P. surgeries. The new and improved health and care organisations work together with the
department to achieve this common purpose.
NHS England
The NHS Commissioning Board, known as NHS England, is an administrative non-
departmental public body of the Department of Health and Social Care. It manages the
budget, planning, delivery, and day-to-day operation of the commissioning side of the NHS
in England as set out in the Health and Social Care Act in 2012. As it’s an independent body,
the DoH cannot interfere with the decision made by them. From 1 April 2021, NHS England
and NHS Improvement were merged to better the NHS to deliver improved care to service
users but they maintained separate boards.
Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs)
Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) were recognised with the Health and Social Care Act
in 2012 and replaced Primary Care Trust on 1 April 2013. CCGs are groups of general
practices in each area that come together to discuss the best services for their patients and
population. They purchase services for their local community for any service providers that
meets NHS standards and costs, for example it could be NHS hospitals, social enterprises,
voluntary organisations, or private sectors providers. This is important as patients will
receive better care because it is designed with knowledge based on their local services and
commissioned in response to their needs.
