Dutch summary with all important basic principles that you need to know and understand for the exam. Especially meant for those who are not good at statistics and who want to get a better understanding of the basic principles. If you combine this summary with my ADA summary (incl. notes and info in lectures and workgroups), you will not only get a better understanding of statistics but also a good preparation for the exam and graduation phase (thesis).

JOHO samenvatting
H1
Categorical variable = consists of categories. You can only be in one category at
a time.
- Binary variable = categorical variable with only 2 levels. E.g. gender
- Nominal variable: when only a number is assigned. This number doesn’t
have the meaning
of a number but is used for categories.
- Ordinal variable = a number with a meaning, representing an order like
the order of
situations.

Continue variable = can have every value on a measuring scale.
- Interval variable = the difference between all values are the same.
- Ratio variable = like the interval variable, but with an absolute zero-point
with meaning.
So you can multiply ratio variables. E.g. time
- Discrete variable = can only choose whole numbers.

Within-group design: the same participants do an experiment several times in
various conditions
Between-group design: different participants do an experiment in the different
conditions.

Histogram – check normality: skewness (scheefheid +/-), kurtosis (peak high/low)
mode: meest voorkomende score
median: middle score 246 of 2345 = 3+4/2 = 3.5 = 2nd quartile = pc50
mean: average score (only possible in interval/ratio variables)

H2

Sx2 = ∑ ( (xi - xgem)2 / (N-1)

Degrees of freedom: aantal observaties (steekproefgrootte) – 1, omdat je de
laatste weet.

populatie vallen. Vaak 95%. 1.96 is z-score.

H4 Grafieken
Outliers: visible in histogram or boxplot or scatterplot.
Boxplot: de box is de middelste 50%, min. max. sticks, mediaan, outliers
 symmetry depends on length of the sticks.

H5 Assumptions
Assumptions for parametric tests
- Normality: gegevens normaal verdeeld? Z-scores helpen in vergelijking.

Check: Levene’s test. Gaat samen met oneway ANOVA.
Look at the absolute difference between every score and the group average.
Levene: significant = violates null hypothesis. This means the variances differ
significantly from each
other. N.S. means variances are approximately equal (homogeneous). Levene: F
