What health improvement program or methodology would you use to solve this problem and what would be a reasonable timeline for implementation? Provide examples of measures that APNs might use when collaborating with direct care nurses to implement evidence-based changes based on community health improvement programs. Provide any relevant literature to support your response. A health related need that is currently present in my community in the city of Katy, Texas is the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Katy has higher income, most of their residence have health insurance and the community have a 6.79% poverty rate. The 5 largest ethnic groups in Katy, TX are White (Non-Hispanic) (63.5%), White (Hispanic) (20.1%), Black or African American (Non- Hispanic) (5.86%), Some Other Race (Hispanic) (4.55%), and Asian (Non-Hispanic) (2.65%) (Data USA, n.d). COVID-19 remains a major health need in this community as residents continue to take precautions to protect their families and communities. As the state of Texas struggle to control the virus, Katy remains one of many cities in the states of Texas battling COVID-19. As schools reopen in the community, 40% of parents in this community has decided to keep their children at home to protect them by selecting virtual school. There are some parents who still want their children to go to school in person. The spread of COVID-19 continues as parents continue to struggle with decisions to send their children back to school because of increase in children under age 18 testing positive. Since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 340,000 children have tested positive for the coronavirus, representing roughly 9% of U.S. cases to date (Turner, 2020). The community need to implement public health programs within residential areas within the community to provide awareness relating to prevention and testing within the community. Health care professionals need to launch a prevention program to assist schools within the community as they struggle with plans on how to protect children as they head back to school. Educational programs about hand hygiene, wearing mask when in close contact with others, and avoiding sharing needs to be emphasized to children as they head back to school. As an Advance Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), it is important to understand the community you live in so you can help improve the health of the community. Improving the health needs of the community you live in also help improve the economy of the community. Understanding a community’s culture is essential to program success. Th e APRN should expect this process to take time, patience, commitment, and persistence. Moreover, understanding the makeup of a community and its cultural norms, and being sensitive and respectful of differences, is essential for successful collaboration and community partnership (Cupp Curley, 2020). Katy, TX. Retrieved from Turner, C. (2020). At least 97,000 children tested positive for coronavirus in the last 2 weeks of July. Retrieved from Hi Sandra, You made a great point on your post about mental health and how it is impacting our communities. It is a major health issue in the United States that need serious attention. It is only going to get worst as people continue to lose their love ones to COVID-19 and are unable to grieve properly, and as people lose their jobs, homes, and livelihood due to the virus. Mental illnesses, such as depression, are the third most common cause of hospitalization in the United States for those aged 18-44 years old, and adults living with serious mental illness die on average 25 years earlier than others (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). Implementing mental health programs within the communities across the US will help reduced hospitalization, and decrease cost and health care burden nationwide. These assignments earn practice immersion hours and are indicated in the assignment by a Portfolio Practice Immersion Hours statement that reminds you, the learner, to enter a corresponding case log in Typhon. Actual clock hours are entered, but the average hours associated with each practice immersion assignment is 10. You are required to complete your assignment using real-world application. Real-world application requires the use of evidence-based data, contemporary theories, and concepts presented in the course. The culmination of your assignment must present a viable application in a current practice setting. For more information on parameters for practice immersion hours, please refer to DNP resources in the DC Network. To earn portfolio practice immersion hours, enter the following after the references section of your paper: Practice Immersion Hours Completion Statement DNP-825 I, (INSERT NAME), verify that I have completed (NUMBER OF) clock hours in association with the goals and objectives for this assignment. I have also tracked said practice immersion hours in the Typhon Student Tracking System for verification purposes and will be sure that all approvals are in place from my faculty and practice mentor.
