Who pays the bill?
‘The government has to pay the bill, so that all citizens can use the health facilities.’
Healthcare becomes unaffordable, current healthcare systems need to be improved. To keep
healthcare accessible for everyone, it is important that the government pays the bills. If the
government pays the bills, the poorer population will also be able to use the healthcare systems.
To start with the Dutch healthcare system. Basic health insurance is obligatory for all Dutch residents.
In their policies, health insurers may impose restrictions on the patients’ free choice, usually in return
for a lower premium. The content of the basic health care insurance package is fixed, but insurers
can compete on the price of policies and the quality of care offered, as long as they observe both the
obligation to accept applicants and the ban on premium differentiation.
So, in fact marketing and competition are used to attract customers, but that is not what the
healthcare system should be about.
Secondly, I spoke to an international contact about the healthcare system in Germany. She told me
the following information. Due to the high costs and quality of healthcare in Germany, purchasing
health insurance is mandatory. The healthcare system in Germany consists of two types of health
insurance: a public health insurance fund regulated by the government and a private health
insurance. The public health insurance fund is mandatory for all employees with an income of less
than €49,500 per year.
A disadvantage of this healthcare system is that a distinction is made between two population
groups, this created inequality in the accessibility of care.
Finally, we discuss the British healthcare system. Healthcare in the UK is almost free. It is not
mandatory to have health insurance. Healthcare in the UK is financed by taxes and government
revenue. The tax rates depend on the level of your income. The average tax rate is about 12 percent.
This tax is automatically deducted from your salary, so you do not have to pay extra premiums.
Because everyone is entitled to free healthcare. An advantage of this system is that you do not have
to pay extra costs for special care treatments.
Because of this, the UK is seen as one of the most social countries in Europe.
I would choose the healthcare system used in the UK. It is a well-designed healthcare system,
because the healthcare is accessible to everyone, and no distinction is made between rich and poor
citizens. The UK is the most social country in Europe for this reason. As a result of this healthcare
system, there is an increase in trust in healthcare.
