, SECTION A: INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

QUESTION 1

1.1 Discuss the following barriers to intercultural communication and provide an
example/s of each barrier from the scenario:

 Discrimination (5)

Discrimination is the behavior that results from stereotyping or prejudice, it may be
based on racism related to belonging to a cultural group. Discrimination may range from
non-verbal for example, excluding someone from a conversation to verbal insults to
physical violence. Black people were discriminated during the Covid-19 pandemic for
example, In the United States (US) most hospitals refused to treat Asian Americans and
they were usually turned back from hospitals during the first wave of Covid-19 outbreak.
African Americans suffered the same fate. In China, most hotels and supermarkets
rejected and/or refused to assist Africans, claiming that they were bringing Covid-19,
while individuals from countries such as US, Canada were allowed in the hotels and
supermarkets. (Martin et al 2013:38).

 Stereotypes (5)

Stereotypes are “widely-held” beliefs about a group of people and are a form of
generalization these generalisations may become harmful if they are held rigid, it is the
way we categorize and process the information we receive about other people. For
example, In China, most hotels and supermarkets rejected and/or refused to assist
Africans, claiming that they were bringing Covid-19. (Martin et al 2013:33)

 Prejudice (5)

Prejudice “is a negative attitude towards a cultural group based on little or no
experience” more like a prejudgment. For example, most Chinese believe that Africans
are violent. In South Africa, the majority of blacks were also victims of police violence
during lockdowns. Police were always in townships and not in Suburbs as they believe
Africans are violent and need to be watched compared to other racial groups (Martin et
al 2013:36).

1.2 Explain how the historical context influence intercultural communication and
provide examples from your own experience.

According to Martin, Nayakama, van Rheede van Oudtshoorn & Schutte (2013: 31- 32)
people communicate differently depending on the context. Context often plays a
significant role in determining how we communicate, and the same context may call for
different behaviour in different cultures. The historical context is usually closely linked to
a political context. The political context in which communication transpires includes
forces that attempt to change or retain existing social structures and relations. Within
the economical context, the privileged and powerful use their influences to dictate
