GCSE Double Award Science
Where do you find Cellulose?
Cellulose is found in a plant cell wall and cannot be digested by humans.
However, as a fibre, it will help the muscles of the intestinal wall push food
through the digestive system.
What is Starch?
Starch is broken down by digestive enzymes into glucose (a type of sugar),
which can be used by cells to make energy,
What are Carbohydrates?
Carbs can provide energy to the body. There are two types of
carbohydrates. 1. Simple 2. Complex Simple carbs are sugars, like glucose
and lactose. Simple carbs are fast acting source of energy, like, biscuits or
energy bars. Complex carbs are a source of low energy release, foods like
pasta or rice
What are Biological Molecules?
The food we eat is made up of biological molecules which gives us energy
and it contains the chemicals we need to grow and repair ourselves and
help the cells in our bodies function. Carbs and Fats are made up of
carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Proteins contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen
and nitrogen
What are Fats and Lipids?
Fats are classed as a store of energy. provided that the energy is made up
of Carbohydrates and Proteins. They are made up of fatty acids and
glycerol. Foods high in fat include cheese, butter and oils.
What are Proteins?
Protein is used in the growth and repair of cells and can be used as a
source of energy if carbs and fats reserves are low. Proteins are made up
of very long chains of amnio acids. Foods that are classed as being high in
protein are fish and eggs.
