Principles of web design

Principles of web design
Introduction:
In this document, I will be elaborating upon the 2 websites and the differences between their
designs and how one is better than the other due to the layout and quality. I will also be going
over the various principles of web design and elaborating on what they are to better
consolidate why one website may be better than the other.

White space: White space is empty space used between lines/text and pictures/images.
White space also enables the reader to have a breather from all the text/information given to
them. White space also presents some type of neatness to the reader as it has a specific layout
and format and would also make the web design more appealing. Implications = Having too
much white space is bad as it looks too spaced out and could cause inconvenience to viewers,
however having too little white space would make the work all cramped up in one spot. This
would cause inconvenience as all the text would be in one area. Meaning the viewer would
have a challenging time reading and absorbing the knowledge given to them as there would be
too much in one spot.

Typography: The kind of font a person would use in production of the website. This also
includes the thoughtful structure of the text and any element that can affect web design.
Typography would also include consideration for the type of the text and the size of the text.
This is because the differences of these may vary depending on the type of info that the
website would want to deliver to the user. The font I would recommend would be arial or any
clear and eligible font. This would make it easier for the reader to read and see compared to
having a wavy font, this would cause problems for the viewers as few people would be able to
read it and nor have the time to try to understand it.

Consistency: Keeps to the same subject, theme and stays on point to the viewer. For the
website it would also mean it also looks the same in layout and design. To have consistency the
web design would not be able to randomly change how the theme looks, this is because it
would appear unappealing to some people, and many would not bother to click/tap on it to
read it. A consistent website design shows a website that has been professionally thought out
and shows that consideration has been given to the user. Users are likely to believe information
from such a website.

Speed: the latency of how quick the website loads. This is good for the viewer as if it takes too
long for the website to load then readers would lose interest in the topic/subject, compared to
if the website had a quick latency, it would save time for the reader as it loads quicker. If the
loading speed takes too long, then the business loses out as they lose a view from the reader.
Losing a view means that the business would not be able to capitalize, and they also lose
money. If a business makes no profit from the website, it causes financial issues for them.

, Principles of web design

Media: Media in web design would be the use of images and videos to give the user a break
from just reading a block of text. By using a video or image it gives the user a time of relaxation,
however having too much media is also bad because it would increase the number of pixels
needed to load. Increasing the number of pixels would decrease the latency of the web page
meaning the loading speed would be too long.

Colour: Contrast and how the fore colour could make the text stand out from the background.
Also, if the background is a dark colour then the text would have a brighter colour. Having a
bold colored title also allows the reader’s eyes to be captivated and would make them want to
read the text below.

Interactivity: The use of hyperlinks to make the user visit various areas of website just by
tapping/clicking them. The use of videos and rhetorical questions could also make the reader
think about what they are reading as well and indulge their interest in finding out more about
what is happening. Having interactivities on the website makes the user feel more involved on
the website and adds to the enjoyment of their experience.

Good website:
A good example of a website that meets all the principles would be BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk )
It meets all the requirements/principles of having a good web design. It delivers very quickly
and smoothly to the readers. It also has extremely easy access to anyone with a device that can
connect to the internet. The BBC’s audience would be anyone with an interest in the outside
world, meaning that the BBC can be used by anyone of any age.

Purpose:
BBC has a noticeably clear objective in mind when it comes to loading onto the website. It fulfils
all the principles while very clearly keeping it to a minimum. BBC’s purpose is to deliver news
and valuable information to the masses. BBC has a selection of pictures of the home page as
the main subject of the day. It has a selection of categories at the top for the viewer to change
what they are viewing. BBC also has an amazingly simple layout and structure for anyone to
understand which makes it very friendly to anyone and everyone. BBC's target audience is
adults aged 35 and over. Its remit is to 'reflect a range of UK (United Kingdom) and international
arts, music, and culture. This would capture the interest of the audience of these ages instead
of younger ages with no interest in such things.
