,TASK 1: CASE STUDY
The Capacity for Self-Awareness
Freedom, choice, and accountability form the basis of self-awareness. Greater self-
awareness results in greater freedom. As we develop our awareness in the following
areas, we strengthen our ability to live fully:

• We are limited in time and cannot do all we want in life.

• We have the option of acting or not acting; inactivity is a choice.

• Because we select our activities, we may partly choose our own destinies.

• Meaning is the result of learning how we are "thrown" or positioned in the universe,
and then living creatively via commitment.

• As our knowledge of the options accessible to us grows, so does our feeling of
responsibility for the outcomes of these choices.

• We are susceptible to isolation, loneliness, meaninglessness, emptiness, and guilt.•
We are basically alone, yet we have an opportunity to relate to other beings. We can
choose either to expand or to restrict our consciousness. Because self-awareness is at
the root of most other human capacities, the decision to expand it is fundamental to
human growth.

, Areas of emerging awareness that we might experience during the counselling process
are:

. Trading the security of dependency for the anxieties accompanying choosing for one. .
. We see that your Identity is defined by others and not self, seeking approval and
confirmation (what I am doing is right by you) instead of self-affirmation (I am doing this
form myself)

. Realise that in many ways we keep ourselves prisoners of our past choices instead of
making new decisions.

. We learn that although we cannot change certain aspects of our lives, we can change
the way in which we perceive and react to them.

. We are not condemned to a future similar to the past, we learn from the past and
shape our own future.

. We realise that we are preoccupied with suffering, death/dying and no appreciate
living.

. We are able to accept our limitations and still feel self-worth, we need not be perfect.

. We realise that we are failing to live in the present because we are preoccupied by the
future and past.

. Increasing self-awareness; which include awareness of alternatives, motivations,
factors influencing the person and personal goals; are the aim of all counselling.

Wendy’s story
As an Existential therapists, I believe wendy is capable of self-awareness, which is the
distinctive capacity that allows her to reflect and to decide. With this awareness she
become free human being who is responsible for choosing the way she live, and she
influence her own destiny. This awareness of freedom and responsibility gives rise to
existential anxiety, which is another basic human characteristic that wendy is
experiencing. Whether Wendy like it or not, she is free, even though she may seek to
avoid reflecting on this freedom. The knowledge that we must choose, even though the
outcome is not certain, leads to anxiety. Wendy decided to leave her husband thus
