CAR WEEK 8 TO 12 LECTURE NOTES

Week 8: Singlehood and sexuality

 Fear of being single is associated with attachment anxiety.
 Fear of being single predicts high romantic interest in less responsive partners.
 Fear of being single predicts high romantic interest in less attractive partners.
 Experimental research suggests that people discriminate against single people.
 No evidence that masturbation causes anything.
 Some research shows that male pornography use predicts lower sexual quality for both
partners, whereas it’s the opposite for females.
 Negative effects of pornography may be greater for people high in religiosity.

Week 9: Relationships during early parenthood

couples have much more of a choice about if they want to have children.
 Parents reported significantly lower relationships satisfaction than nonparents.
 Couple relationship quality is critical not only for parents but also has significantly influence
on infant development and later child development.

Week 10: Relationships in older age

 Social network size reduces over time but social interactions are more satisfying.
 Older people may be treated more kindly by others in society.

 Time was not associated with hopelessness, life satisfaction, health or social loneliness.
 In a study, couples reported lower levels of conflict and more pleasure in many areas.

Week 11: Diversity and romantic relationships

 Intercultural couples can face challenges negotiating how to raise children because of
religion, cultural practises, education and values.
 Some evidence show that intercultural couples are at higher risk of break-up but differences
depend on gender and variation.
 There are many different forms of nonmonogamy; swingers, polyamory and open
relationships.

Week 12: Relationship interventions and couple therapy

 Couples seek therapy because of relationship conflict, emotional disengagement and
reduced commitment, threats to security and life crises affecting the couple relationship.
 Behavioural couple therapy; based on social learning principles, teaches partners to behave
more generously towards each other.
 Cognitive-behavioural couple therapy; retained focus on increasing positive behaviour and
teaching relationship skills.
 Primary emotions are deeper and more vulnerable emotions.
 Secondary emotions are more reactive emotions.
 Stages of EFT; 1- De-escalation of negative cycle, 2- Changing interactional patterns, 3-
