Labour relations refers to the interaction between industry's bosses and employees,
as well as the political policies and regulations that influence it (Tomaselli, 2016).
They are various aspects which affect labour relations. This paper will focus on how
Ubuntu principles relate to labour relations. The second part will focus on how
globalisation have influenced labour relations. It was been widely known that
globalisation has changed a lot of things in the world including labour environment.
Trade unions have been known to play a significant role in the employment sector. It
is important to know why employees join trade unions and the relevance of these
unions.
2. THE UBUNTU PHILOSOPHY AND ITS UNDERLYING VALUES
Ubuntu is derived from the Nguni (isiZulu) proverb Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu,
which means "a person is a person because of or via others" (Woermann &
Engelbrecht, 2019). Ubuntu is the capacity of an African culture to show compassion,
reciprocity, dignity, humanity, and mutuality for the purpose of establishing and
sustaining communities based on justice and mutual care (Tomaselli, 2016).
The Ubuntu application is widespread over the majority of the African continent.
Consequently, the Ubuntu ideology is incorporated into many parts of daily life in Africa
and is a notion shared by all Bantu tribes in Southern, Central, West, and East Africa
(Qobo & Nyathi, 2016). Although the Bantu languages have developed since the
concept's inception, the meanings and concepts of Ubuntu remain the same in all of
these languages. .
3. THE APPLICATION OF UBUNTU PRINCIPLES IN LABOUR RELATIONS
MANAGEMENT
3.1.1 Integrity and accountability
Robinson (2016) defines integrity as the capacity to be truthful and to possess strong
moral beliefs. Accountability is the capacity to accept the repercussions of one's
conduct. These two qualities aid leaders in fostering a sense of communal
togetherness among their constituents (Robinson, 2016). With these two principles,
