QUESTION 1.1 Verbal and non-verbal communication.

Paraphrase the following piece of text on page 35 of your online learning resource for Learning Unit 7 – verbal
and non-verbal communication. Add an appropriate in-text citation and a source list.

It may be necessary to apply different listening strategies in different listening contexts. Listening is an
important skill in professional contexts, but most people are not explicitly taught it. Listening environments
should promote and reward competent listening behaviours within an organization. Relational contexts call
for listening to initiate relationships, as it is necessary for self-disclosure, and to maintain them, as listening
provides a psychological reward. Not being listened to can cause people to feel isolated or lonely, which
can negatively impact their lives (Anon, 2020). Listening preferences and behaviors can be influenced by
high-context and low-context communication styles, monochronistic or polychronic orientations toward
time, individualistic or collectivistic values, and monochronic or polychronic cultural values. There has been
conflicting research regarding men's and women's listening preferences. Although there are some
differences in listening between men and women, many of these are a result of societal expectations
regarding how men and women should listen rather than biological differences.
