Filter Theory
Alan Kerckchoff and Keith Davis (1962) compared the attitudes and personalities of student
couples in short-term (less than 18 months) and long-term relationships.
A filter theory was devised to explain how such romantic relationships form and develop.
When it comes to partners, we all have a field of availables, the entire set of potential
romantic partners.
According to both researchers, there are 3 main factors that act as filters to narrow down
our range of partner choice to a field of desirables.
Each of these factors assumes greater or lesser importance at different stages of a
relationship.
