To what extent did the leadership of Robert Aske make the risings of 1536-37 a serious threat to the
authority of Henry VIII?

Argument = Robert Aske did contribute to making the risings a serious threat due to his leadership and his tactical use of his gentry
background and faith. But this is to an extent as Aske’s negotiations and naivety also meant the disbanding of the rising and so the
failure. Other factors that increased the threat of the rebellion was the involvement of nobility, gentry and even clergy. As well as
the rapidity of the rebels gather their armies, increase in support/size and acquire the Crown’s land
Para 1 = Robert Aske’s leadership increased the threat
Para 2 = the involvement and support of nobility, gentry, clergy
Para 2 = challenged henry’s government as they outnumbered the royal army and acquired crownland

, To what extent did the leadership of Robert Aske make the risings of 1536-37 a serious threat to the authority of Henry VIII?

Aske’s leaderships:
• Military captain = organised the musters of the commons in Yorkshire where the rebellion broke out in 16 th October 1536
• Charismatic leaders e.g. insisted on being peaceful and orderly, forbode foot soldiers from entering York to prevent stealing
disorder = rebellion grew in size and remained peaceful = attracted the landed gentry who would have been threatened if th
violence
• Natural leader due to his legal training and as a member of a gentry family = able to speak and negotiate effectively with me
the gentry and nobility = at Pontefract Aske spoke to Lord Darcy and persuaded him to join the movement
• Intelligence/ skilled as a speaker/ legal training = able to articulate the grievances of the rebels clearly
• Aske balanced between the demands of the gentry and those of the commons (repeal of supremacy act, removal of Cromwe
of act of use, banning of enclosures etc, complaints of high tax) = cohesion amongst rebels
• Due to his background training he could write = wrote to rebels = constant co0ntact = ideas associated with the rebellion we
and speed = co-ordinate

• Askes idealism/ loyalty to henry/ absolute conviction in the moral rightness of his rebellion = willing to accept the concession
by duke of Norfolk December 1536
• Aske’s naivety = the threat the rebels once posed was gone = aske allowed the commons/rebels to disperse = Norfolk and he
advantage of their obedience = further risings used by Henry to exploit the tensions between nobility and the commons = br
supression
• hilst his fellow rebels were suspicious of Henry, Aske didn't listen when they tried to convince him.
• `asked trusted too much but in negotiations norkfolf was delibartly vague with only verbal promises = could go back on their
punish the rebels, if they continued they would have easily defeated them
