Question 1
1.1) Activity 1
I will do a reading activity where I will read a book on something that is
familiar to the learners, for example on the topic of animals. To engage the
learners in a discussion after the story, I will ask them questions, for example:
Who likes animals? What kind of animals do you have at home?
Their frame of reference gets develop with things that are familiar to them,
which they see and experience on a daily basis and it makes learning easier
and fun for them.
Activity 2
We will sing songs and common rhymes that the learners enjoy, I will
encourage them by the use of affective gestures and peer stimulation to
participate in repeating-singing-play acting-dramatising the verbs/action/doing
words.
1.2) It is important to teach language formally, but as well as informally and
therefore it is important to create a language rich environment so that
language skills can be learnt incidentally. The following materials or resources
can be used to facilitate language learning: Daily chart, Weather chart,
Birthday calendar, Classroom labels, Reading corner (read aloud every day,
create a diverse classroom library), Alphabet word wall, The word wall, etc
Question 2
2.1.1) Stage 1: The Pre-reader
Sindi’s dad goes to the library to select books for himself and Sindi and he
then reads the books to her at home, this indicates that she can’t yet read by
herself. She is exposed to how one should read, therefore in my opinion she
should be able to know how to hold a book and turn the pages correctly, as
well as recognise the beginning and end of a book. She listens and responds
to the stories her father reads to her because she loves to share this new
learning with her parents. When they go to the shops her parent will pint out
names on the item they buy, which indicates that she is showing interest in
the world around her, and she might even recognise some letters or pretend
that she can read.
2.1.1) Build on what is familiar to her, for example during show and tell ask Sindi
and the rest of the learner to bring object from home to talk about.
Build on the her exposure text, books and signs: As a teacher I will make sure
that the classroom is surrounded by print on the walls, including posters and
charts (daily chart, weather chart, birthday calendar, words wall etc) as well as
classroom labels. It is important that Sindi interact with the print every day and
we can do that during the morning circle where we can for instance discuss
