revolutions primarily the result of
political groups opposed to the
government’
both revolutions were primarily driven by the war
working conditions drove opposition groups
uselessness of the government - couldn’t deal with the opposition
intro
they were not insignificant but not the whole story - there was a war on and 2 useless
governments
section 1
political groups - were important e.g. October revolution - entirely the work of the bolsheviks -
only Lenin anticipated a 2nd revolution in 1917. most of the marxists and socialists in 1917
thought it was done for the next 5years after the February rev. but Lenin anticipates it and works
for it e.g. April theses, also tries to appeal to peasants - ‘peace, bread, land’ and comprised his
principles to get them on his side; Trotsky - military revolutionary committee: was in charge of
soldiers at the time of the revolution in Oct and got into the Petrograd soviet - organiser of
victory. were important with the second rev because they organised it
political groups did have some influence on Feb - organising strike activity e.g. Putilov iron
works strike. a lot of the activity that prompts the riots weren’t necessarily organised by trade
unions or the bolsheviks. its not the most important
they’re quite important, they can take advantage of circumstances created by WW1 and the
governments
