Ethical and Legal Implications
There are multiple potential issues for members of the healthcare team that can arise
from the office conflict illustrated in the provided case study. In the short amount of time the
nurse practitioner (NP) has been working in the practice, they have witnessed multiple
occurrences of clinical staff engaging in heated arguments with each other. The fact that most of
the administrative and clinical staff have been working together at the practice for over 15 years
suggests that the behavior witnessed in just 3 months by the NP has most likely been going on
for much longer. These observations strongly suggest that this negative atmosphere has become
the norm for the practice and is ingrained in the overall culture of the workplace. An article was
written about the long-term effects of workplace conflict that built upon previous research
showing negative feelings are connected to discord in the workplace, a statistical increase in the
incidence of workplace conflicts, and known adverse motivational and performance outcomes
related to negative emotions (Rispens & Demerouti, 2016). Potential issues for members of the
healthcare team include poor job performance, lack of motivation, increased personal stress
and its associated health effects, and decreased job satisfaction. These potential effects apply
to all members of the healthcare team and not only to those who are actively participating in
active displays of workplace conflict. Additional effects of workplace conflict include potential
lost revenue related to productive time wasted on associated disruptions and mediating
conflict; higher employee turnover resulting in the need to search for, hire, and train
replacements; and potential cost of litigation from separated employees or adverse patient
outcomes.
