Communication is important for a tracheostomy patient. Most patients with a tracheostomy won’t be able to speak. Before a patient get a tracheostomy, patient should be taught about non-verbal communications. Patient can write to communicate their needs to the caretaker. Teach the patient how to communicate pain faster by either raising a finger or blinking eye. However, now they have developed speaking valves that allow these patients to talk. What are three nursing interventions when treating someone with MRSA? MRSA patient have to be under isolation to prevent the infection from spreading to other people. Teach the patient’s family/visitors to wash hands before and after contact with that environment or the patient to prevent infection from spreading. MRSA patient’s clothes and other equipment needs to be washed separately. Use separate stethoscope and blood pressure cuffs for MRSA patients. Monitor vital signs and labs as ordered. What are the nutritional challenges for patients with a tracheostomy? Patients with a tracheostomy is at risk for aspiration and malnutrition. After placing a tracheostomy, it is important to do an x-ray to see if the tube is placed correctly. Tracheostomy patients have difficulty swallowing. If it’s severe, the patient may need either enteral or parenteral nutrition since they won’t be able to swallow food. It is important to monitor the patient’s nutrition because malnutrition can lead to poor improvement from their disease.
