1.1 Classroom versus laboratory
❖ Classroom will contain more pre-packaged topologies and learning environments that are
applicable to educational environments, whereas Lab would provide access to more partner
applications typical of a service provider lab environment
1.2 Equipment for practical science in the classroom
❖ Practical science activities have huge significance in the learning process. They engage
students, helping them to develop important skills, understand the process of scientific
investigation and develop a broad understanding of scientific concepts
1.3 Safety in the classroom and environmental impact outside it

❖ Set classroom rules. ...
❖ Develop their empathy skills. ...
❖ Group exercises. ...
❖ Remind them that trying is more important than being right. ...
❖ Decorate your classroom with students' work. ...
❖ Recognize student's work or effort in different ways. ...
❖ Don't take yourself too seriously.

1.4 Practical science on a shoestring

'Teaching on a Shoestring' definitely provides a boost to the imagination, and offers teachers a wide
range of adaptable ideas to incorporate into the planning and resourcing of lessons. Fresh and
innovative, 'Teaching on a Shoestring' will enthuse and engage both learners and teachers alike

1.5 Practical science in the classroom

Practical science activities have huge significance in the learning process. They engage
students, helping them to develop important skills, understand the process of scientific
investigation and develop a broad understanding of scientific concepts.

QUESTION 2 2.

2.1 Your PSC1501 study guide explains that science teachers think that practical science is a good
thing. Research on the subject shows the main reasons for this as indicated in the study guide.

Practical science activities have a huge significance in the learning process. They help students to
develop important skills, understanding the process of scientific investigation and develop and
understanding of scientific concepts. a.Motivation It is one of the reasons science teachers think that
practical science is recommended to children. Motivation is basically linked in three ways curiosity,
achievement and understanding. -Curiosityrefers to the question that most children have on their

, minds, and they wish to find out, questions like what happened? Who did it? Why did it happen? What
will happen if I...?. All these questions that children are interested in finding out are about the physical
world around us, at school, walking to school, while shopping or at home. Yet curiosity is a
requirement for scientist, so practical work will have learners to have an understanding of some of
the things they are curious about. -Achievementrefers to learning how to do something successfully.
Teachers should provide learners with a chance to achieve, not necessary passing their tests but
getting experiments to work or make drawings that shows skills of observation. -Understandingimplies
knowing how different facts are associated or connected and why. Children getting to know how and
why in science, it will come from their thinking and from their experimentation.
b.DevelopingpracticalskillsIt is referred to one of the reasons why practical science is necessary in a
school curriculum, these are related to the scientific experimentations. These practical skills have
application as life skills, for instance learning how to handle chemicals, which teaches learners how to
do this at home when using acids. Practical work teaches how to safe fixing an electric fault at home,
more likely because it would have been done in practical work with electric circuits. Learners who
achieve such skills can get more motivation from being able to do things that have value outside their
classroom, learners will be aware of hazard's, safety and impact on the environment, which they will
learn during practical work at schools. Practical skills also develops a way of living and an attitude
towards the environment that we need to for a livable future. c.Learning the scientific approach
d.Gaining a better understanding of theorical aspects of the subject Theories arise from observations,
they satisfy the need to make sense of our experiences. Learners can get a better understanding of
theories if they take an experimentation or if the engage in practical work.

2.2 Illustrate your understanding of these reasons by explaining each reason and applying practical
examples where they are evident.

Don't always answer student's questions-Learning is not always about being spoon-fed answers by
teachers. 2.5 Distinguish between a practical investigation, demonstration, projects, and
experiments by describing each. Give examples to illustrate your answer. a. Practical investigation -It
is an activity that includes collecting, processing and interpreting data. It is important because it
develops student's science skills, develops their understanding of the nature of science, and
supports their learning and understanding science. -Controlling the variables that could have effect
on results. -Drawing a linear graph, valid for the data and writing a conclusion that state the
equation of the relationship

QUESTION 3

In the Natural Sciences Grade 6 curriculum is the topic of mixtures. Design an investigation which
determines the method of separating mixtures of substances, which are still clearly visible after
mixing. Your investigation must include the following mixtures:

x Two solids – peanuts and dried beans
