State Specific Guidelines for Prescribing Controlled Substances
The Nurse Practitioner is a very vast role that requires extensive knowledge. One
important aspect of being a Nurse Practitioner is understanding and following the guidelines for
prescribing control substances within their state. In the state of Florida, the organization that is
responsible for creating and updating these guidelines is the Florida Health Department which
consists of sub-departments including the Florida Board of Nursing.
State Specific Guidelines and Recommendations
The Florida Health Department has set guidelines and recommendations for pain
management therapies and education for providers. The department was formed by the Florida
Legislature in 1996, however, the initiation of public health was dated back to 1888 and was then
named Florida State Board of Health (Florida Health Department, n.d.). The Florida Health
Department is easily accessible at www.floridahealth.gov. The department provides information
for providers for the prescription drug monitoring program, standards for operating pain clinics,
and guidelines for prescribing opioids for pain management (Florida Health Department, n.d.).
There is also information for providers about informing patients of non-opioid alternatives for
pain treatment and guidelines on using counterfeit-proof prescription pads.
There are no other official state resources for pain management. Reference to the
American Pain Society is no longer available as the association dissolved in 2019. However,
there are other organizations such as the American Chronic Pain Association which provide
education in pain management skills for both healthcare providers and patients. There
is also the American Academy of Pain Medicine which focuses on multidisciplinary approaches
for pain management and incorporating modalities from numerous disciplines to ensure thorough
evaluation and treatment of patients with pain (American Academy of Pain Medicine, n.d.).
