Atoms, Elements, Compounds
,Atoms
• Atoms contain Protons, Neutrons and Electrons
• Protons have a charge of +1, Neutrons are neutral and so have 0
charge and Electrons have a charge of -1
• In the nucleus is the middle of the atom, it contains protons and
neutrons and therefore has a positive charge
• The relative masses of protons and neutrons are both 1, they are
heavy in comparison to electrons and together in the nucleus make
up almost the whole mass of the atom
• Electrons move around the nucleus in electron shells – they are VE
small and so have almost no mass.
