Michael is a 10-year-old African American. He has 4 other siblings, two are still living in
the home and two are adults living outside of the home. Michaels’ mother is currently a single
mother. His father has never been a part of his life and his stepfather passed away from opioid
usage. There were reported domestic violence incidents in the home prior to his stepfather
passing away (Laureate Education Inc. 2019).
Michael is in 4th grade and was referred to services due to unwanted behaviors at school.
The behaviors that Michael exhibited ranged from defiant disruptive behaviors to physically
aggressive behaviors. During his treatment, Michael was able to learn some appropriate coping
skills. He was able to identify how his thoughts affected his feelings and behaviors (Laureate
Education Inc. 2019).
There is an ongoing struggle with stability and security within Michaels’ home. The
family has moved often and at one point left the state close to the end of the school year. At the
beginning of the next school year, the family returned to the school and Michael’s behaviors had
intensified. Michael’s mother is hesitant to become involved in Michael’s treatment (Laureate
Education Inc. 2019).
Social Work Roles
The social worker in this case created a treatment plan to address the unwanted behaviors
that Michael was exhibiting. The social worker provided evidence-based interventions such as
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Trauma Informed Care through one-on-one therapeutic
sessions. Once the identified goals were set, the social worker began including Michael’s family
in some of the sessions. It is imperative to the success of the child that family involvement is
