P1 Explain how a large business recruits and selects giving reasons for their
processes

BMW started in Munich, Germany in 1913, they started by creating aircraft engines for
WW1. They then went onto creating motorcycles from 1923, With their first
motorbike being called BMW R 32. BMW then went onto building their first car in 1928
which was under the company Austin Motor Company. This was later replaced by the
companies own design in 1932. The company is known to be an international business,
employing over 8,000 in the UK alone, with them investing £2Billion from 2000 with the
UK being BMW's 4th largest sales market in the world.1 Worldwide the company has
over 120,0002 employers. Their top competitors are Mercedes, Porche, Audi and
Volkswagen; with BMW currently being the number 1 car brand as of 2021. In the
second quarter of 2021, BMW sold 14,171 more units than Mercedes-Benz, 13,101 more
units than Lexus and 29,566 more than Audi.2 (Appendix 1). BMW's revenue is currently
98.99 billion euros as of 2020, with them selling over 2,324,809 vehicles in that year
alone. The BMW 3 series is currently the most popular type of BMW with over 118,369
models sold since released in 2019. BMWs target audience is mostly known to be of the
upper class, with most of their clients being aged 30-50. 3 As BMW is considered to be
a high-end car, people feel a sense of pride when owning this car. Also, the person
owning the car feels to belong to a higher social class in compared to buying cars such
as Toyotas or Suzuki's. One of BMWs main marketing tips are using celebrities as
brand ambassadors to their vehicles. BMW have also been known to be the first car
brand to create a 3D augmented reality type of product on snapchat in order to
promote their new BMW X2. They achieved this by creating a filter on snapchat which
allows you to experience the car and have a driveable experience in the comfort of your
own home. Users are also able to play with the cars features, such as changing the
colours of the vehicle and viewing it different perspectives.
1. What are the reasons for your particular business recruiting e.g., retirement, changes in
technology? Explain the reasons with evidence.
BMW have recently been recruiting for a variety of reasons as their business has been
expanding largely with them currently having 4,400 dealers in over 150 countries. As
BMW is an international business, they need to employ new people frequently in order
to ensure they aren’t just employing older people or primarily males.
In recent years BMW have been recruiting more employees as they are expanding their
business. BMW are currently opening stores in different countries, this increases the

number of staff the company needs. Also, many BMW employees are retiring or going
on maternity leave. This will then mean BMW need a few new and temporary employees
needed as they have gaps which need to be filled in order for the company to run
smoothly.
2. Describe the businesses stages of recruitment.
When it comes to working at BMW, they have been known to be very thorough with
their recruitment process.
Step 1- firstly BMW will need to write up a job analysis, in order for BMW to interest
applicants
Step 2- BMW will then need to write up a job description to let applicants know the
exact role they will be playing in your company
Step 3- BMW will need to write up a job advertisement to allow applicants to apply for
the jobs.
Step 4 - after this, candidates will need to apply online to the position that they feel
theyare best qualified for.
Step 5 – then candidates will be asked to complete and online reasoning test. The test
includes verbal reasoning, numerical, situational and logical. BMW have offered practice
tests to potential candidates which you are able to buy for a price of £7.99 or £29.99
for all 6 sections of the test, for potential candidates. 4
Step 6 - After completing the assessment, candidates will need to go onto completing a
video or a phone call interview, if the tests are passed.
Step 7 - if the candidate has passed this interview, BMW will need you to complete a
jobs skills assessment and situational judgment test.
Step 8 - if once the candidates has gone through all these procedures and succeeded,
they will need to go onto performing a few group exercises in order to see if they have
the skills and ability to work with others.
Step 9 - if passed there will be a final row of partner interviews before BMW can
finally respond to candidates on if they received the job or not. This waiting period
takes about 2 weeks.
3. Does the business conduct internal or external methods of recruitment or both? Explain the
advantages (linking back to the reasons for their processes) and disadvantages of the methods they
use (2-3 advantages and disadvantages).
BMW have been known to hire both internal and external candidates for their opening
roles. Both these methods come with their own advantages and disadvantages of how it
will impact the company.
