Supporting individuals with additional needs

Within this report, I will be evaluating the individuals which are receiving a diagnosis of additional
needs and explaining their conditions and how they developed their condition. I will also be
discussing the professionals background such as their qualifications, the parameters used, prognosis
such as if they will recover from their disorder, the tool used to assess their disability and the
standard which is codes of practice.

When assessing disabilities there is a scale, this scale includes mild, moderate, severe, and profound
learning disabilities. Mild disability is based on the ability which the individual must learn practical
life skills, their social skills, literacy skills and maths skills, how they conduct in everyday life
situations and have no physical signs of disability. Moderate disability, this is when the individual is
developing slowly within their speech or motor skills and can even be both which can also come with
physical impairments (University, 2020). Severe disability, this is when the individual is having a
delay within developing in many different areas. Having a severe disability can effect on intellectual,
physical, social, and emotional development. It can also affect their fine and gross motor skills,
communication, and hearing (S, 2022). Profound learning disability is when an individual has a
severe learning disabilities and others alongside, this then effects their ability to communicate and
to be independent (NHS, 2022).

Rebecca Brown is an 8-year-old child, she is physically impaired which has now prevented her from
being able to move her body from below the spine. The reason as to of why she is unable to do so is
because she was in a road traffic accident, over time her condition will not change due to the
severity of it. Rebecca’s also requires additional help with everyday activities, within school she has a
teaching assistant which assist her with maintaining her personal care. Due to Rebecca being in a
wheelchair, this also means that buildings which she enters must be accessible. However, Rebecca’s
home is not as it is too small, and her parents are unable to afford a house which is beneficial for her
need.

When it comes to the doctors and nurses diagnosing Rebecca’s condition, they must use at least one
of these three diagnostic procedures to determine her issue. Firstly, the service providers can use x-
rays. This allows the service providers to be able to examine Rebecca and then see her vertebrae
within her spine, x-rays are also taken to see any abnormal movement within the bones. Secondly,
the service providers can use CT scans. The service providers use an x-ray and a computer to make
2D images of Rebecca’s spine, sometimes it requires a dye to be injected within the individuals blood
stream and sometimes not this tends to be done if they service provider must examine the bone
structure of the spine. Lastly, service providers can use MRI scans. This is a magnetic field and
radiofrequency waves to provide a detailed image of the soft tissue of the spinal cord, the advantage
of an MRI scan is that the service users are then also able to see the nerves and disc within the spine.
MRI scans are usually used to be able to see the damage which has been pressured onto the
ligaments, this then allows them to be able to diagnose the individual correctly.

When it comes to issues with the spinal cord, the specialist for this would be a neurosurgeon.
Neurosurgeons require specific qualifications before working with individuals suffering from spinal
issues and this includes a high degree within Manuel dextrally, perfect hand eye-co-coordination,
20/20 vision, special awareness, confidence and caution, good organisation skills, good
communication skills and having good stamina to be able to then move about with the individual
which then allows them to be able to diagnose Rebecca correctly without making mistakes.
However, the condition which Rebecca is suffering from is a long-term injury as it has prevented her
from being able to move her body from the waist down.

Ben Grace is a 52-year-old man, Ben suffers from Down syndrome and type 2 diabetes. For Ben,
Down syndrome cannot be maintained and is a long-term issue however his type 2 diabetes is
controllable, and this can go from being server to less server over a period. Along with this, Ben has
some other additional needs such as learning difficulties which has allowed Ben to have the mental
age of an 8-year-old child, this is also an additional need which comes on a scale which can be mild
to server. Ben is currently struggling to follow his diet plan too; this is because the service providers
have found sweets tucked away under his mattress when this can make his type 2 diabetes worse.
This has then caused Ben's glucose levels to become unstable; this has allowed Ben to then feel
unwell and become withdrawn. Ben emotionally is not coping too; this is because Ben had recently
faced discrimination when he attempted to enter the fair and was told his different appearance
would stop others from wanting to come into the fair.

When it comes to diagnostic procedures, there are many ways to be able to determine if Ben was
bound to have Down syndrome or not. Whilst Ben's mother was pregnant with him the doctors and
nurses could have prenatal testing. Usually, this is the best time for a mother to take the test before
pregnancy because this allows them to be able to check family history which gives the chances of the
child being born with this disorder. Firstly, there are screening test. This is what determines the
likelihood of Down syndrome and any other disorder, there are two types of screening test which
are blood test and ultrasound. Blood tests are done to measure the protein and hormone levels
within the body, if the protein and hormone levels are abnormal this can then increase the chances
of having a genetic condition. Secondly, an ultrasound can be done. This provides an image of the
fetes; this picks up heart conditions and any other structural changes to the fetes to be able to
determine Down syndrome the fetes tend to have extra skin behind their skin which indicates Down
syndrome. There is also diagnostic test, firstly there is CVS. This is when a small amount of the
mother's placenta is taken away, this then is sent away and is assessed to be able to identify any
conditions which may contain chromosome abnormalities this test is usually done within the first
trimester of pregnancy. Lastly, there is an amniocenteses test. This test is when the service provider
inserts a needed within the amniotic sac which covers the fetes, this then tracks and traces any
abnormal chromosome activities within the baby which is done within the second trimester of
pregnancy.

When diagnosing type 2 diabetes, the test which is usually done is the glycated haemoglobin test
which is a test done every 2-3 months to check blood glucose levels (Research, 2022). However,
