Forensic Video Analysis
David Spreadborough CFVA - International Trainer, Amped
Software
Typical unit = Forensic Manager – Digital manager – Forensic
Video Analysis and Forensic Video Technicians (deal with
everything from shoplifting to murder and harassment to
terrorism)
Every force handles CCTV differently
CCTV is not standardised (they use different systems such as
windows)
Major incident recovery plans (not a lot of buildings and towns
have this)
Home systems – ring doorbells – problems appearing because
of privacy
Most CCTV is used for a different purpose then intended, such
as CCTV on a shop is there to protect the shop however it
might be used to find a criminal who walked past
Areas of interest – intelligence available
2 men stealing jewellery on Christmas, using alarm blockers
to get into the transit vans, never been caught, whole of
Chester had CCTV cameras, found the car with a partial plate
on one camera and then found full plate on AMPR camera
Used in CCTV investigations/analysis’s
o Integrity – has it changed since the time it was created, if
it has changed it can lead to reasonable doubt
o Authenticity – does it show what it is supposed to show,
such as tattoos or scars
Acquisition challenges:
o Priorities and parameters?
o Trawl completed?
o Can owner complete?
o Does it require Forensic Video Technician attendance?
o Location difficulties, such as in a loft?
o Location of data?
o Knowledge/ equipment?
How to play the footage – different systems and programmes
Forensic Video Analysis – the scientific examination,
comparison and/or evaluation of video in legal matters
Purpose of forensic video analysis:
o Establish opportunities to remove doubt
