Introduction.
This report will describe the different causes of fires, how they behave and their phases. It will also
include graphical data showing the corelation between heat release and the phases of fire. Secondly
this report will contain information about the products of pyrolysis and how it affects the behaviour of
fire. Also including fire patterns and the effects of ventilation on the behaviour of a fire. Lastly
analysing how the different causes of fire changes the way in which the fire behaves, using named
examples of different fuels.


Causes of fire (Domestic).
 Smoking: Since 2009, 50 percent of deaths in house fires have been caused by smoking
materials, according to the fire department. (Accidental)

 Cooking: Kitchen fires are the most deadly cause of house fires in the UK, accounting for a
high percentage of all accidental home fires. (Accidental)

 Heating Systems: Home heating systems are responsible for around 12.5 percent of
residential house fires. The working temperature of a portable heater is high enough to cause
ignition.

 Candles: Candles can be found in every household, (Accidental)

 Electrical Wiring & Appliances: A substantial majority of house fires in the UK are
caused by faulty and broken equipment, as well as an overloaded extension cord.

 Children: Children are naturally curious at a young age and cannot be prevented from being
mischievous on occasion. (Accidental)

 Intentional Fires: Although accidental fires are not always the cause of house fires, it is
distressing to learn that 4.2 percent of house fires are started on purpose. (Deliberate)
