The Da Vinci Code
Connection between the title and the book
Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu are trying to figure out what secret her grandfather kept, after he
was murdered in the Louvre. When he was dying, her grandfather left a lot of clues, because he was
the last one alive to know this secret. He referred to a lot of paintings made by Da Vinci and he
personated the Vitruvian man. Da Vinci was part of the same group as Sophia’s grandfather many
years ago. And a lot of the clues are related to Da Vinci. That’s why the book is called the Da Vinci
Code.

Main characters
They are both very professional and aware of the danger they’re in. “‘The number looks right,’
Langdon confirmed, carefully checking what they had typed and comparing it to the printout." And
they make a great team, because Sophie is a cryptologist and he knows everything about symbols.

Favourite character
''’I tried to phone you.’ Sophie continued in English, as if out of courtesy to Langdon. ‘But your cell
phone was turned off.’ ‘I turned it off for a reason,’ Fache hissed. ‘I am speaking to Mr Langdon. ‘I’ve
deciphered the numeric code,’ she said flatly .” Before this part the men were trying to figure out the
code, and she just walks in and knows exactly what it means. I love how confident and smart she is
and how she amazes the people around her.

Character development
Sophie is very distant at the beginning, but later on she trusts Langdon. “’He trusted you, Robert. I
trusted you!’” She thought he killed her grandfather, that’s why she’s mad at him. In the end, they
like each other. “Then, leaning forward, she kissed him tenderly on the cheek. ‘When can I see you
again?’” They’ve been through a lot together, so I already predicted that they would end up with
one another.

The most important emotional conflict
Teabing will shoot Sophie if Robert doesn’t give him the cryptex. This man is not worthy of the Grail,
and Langdon cannot figure out how to get out of this situation. Then he cracks the code and opens
the cryptex, without anyone noticing. He throws it in the air and Teabing drops his gun and tries to
catch it. When he does, he sees that the letters are not random anymore, but he sees the word
APPLE. Sophie and the secret are both safe.

Ending
There was a closed and happy ending. I thought it was predictable that Robert and Sophie liked each
other at the end of the book. The last pages were mysterious, because Langdon falls onto his knees
and he thinks he hears a woman’s voice. That makes you wonder if it was Maria whispering to him. I
love that Dan Brown ended his book with love and happiness, but also keeps the mystery intact.

Setting
It all begins in the Louvre. This makes sense, because along the way, you learn a lot about history
and cultures. And they were in churches, because there are a lot of references to the bible in this
