, 1.1 Name and describe, in your own words, the six career hurdles as
conceptualised by Ngand Feldman (2014). (12)
Traits-like career-related hurdles such as neuroticism can be hurdles or
barriers that hinder the attainment of career goals and success hence bringing
in fewer opportunities for high-quality education since some of the
professional jobs require one to be creative and innovative.
Background related hurdles refer to elements in an individuals background
that can create a starter advantage or disadvantage in launching a career , for
example people from economically marginalised and low socioeconomic
levels might have fewer opportunities for high quality education which may
limit their career options.
Motivational hurdles refer to a weak internal motivation to become successful
and a low likelihood of expanding resources to achieve long-term career goals.
Skill-related hurdles include a lack of requisite knowledge and skills needed to
advance in a career, which limits the likelihood of attaining career success.
Social network hurdles relate to an individual social capital. Little social capital
that is lack of meaningful relationships within the workplace and with
professionals outside the company and industry which then results in
individuals being disadvantaged in terms of learning about new job
opportunities, successfully obtaining those positions and receiving
sponsorship from senior, experienced colleagues and mentors in the
occupation.
Organisational and job hurdles refer to the work environment, such as lack of
organisational support lack of promotion opportunities, low job challenge and
low skills utilisation in the job, which either enables or disempowers
individuals from achieving career success.
1.2 Reflect on your personal career. Identify TWO career hurdles that
may explain your current career concerns. Provide examples from your
career story to substantiate your answer. (8)
My social capital is at the center of my social network challenges because of a
lack of meaningful relationships within the workplace and with professionals
outside the company and industry, I am at a disadvantage in terms of learning
about new job opportunities, successfully obtaining those positions, and
receiving sponsorship from senior, experienced colleagues and mentors in the
occupation.
Organizational and job barriers related to my work environment, such as a
lack of organizational support, a lack of advancement chances, a lack of job
challenge, and a lack of talent utilization in the workplace are amoungst my
career hurdles which is one of my future concern.
