The Impact of Diabetes On the Health of An African American Adult
Have you ever lost a loved one due to the complications of diabetes? I lost my father when he
was only 56 years old due to complications of diabetes. I work as a nurse technician in a hospital
and as part of my daily routine, I check the blood sugar of my patients before they eat every
meal. Sometimes, I check the bruises on their fingers as a result of pricking their fingers
continuously and it breaks my heart. I have realized that out of every eight patients whose blood
sugar I check, five of them happen to be African American adults. The healthy people 2030 seeks
to address the social determinants of health among the minority of which my target population
happens to be part. Their goal is to eliminate health disparities and achieve health equity to
improve the health and well-being of all. This presentation would discuss the risk factors of the
target population in getting diabetes, educate the target population on how to reduce the risk of
getting the disease, and discuss ways to manage the disease to live a long healthy life after the
disease has already been contracted.
Target Population (African American Adults, 65 years and older)
My target population is African American adults. Since my dad died due to diabetes
complications, I know I have a higher risk of getting diabetes because of my family history. I
chose this population because William et al, 2020 stated that African Americans are more likely
to have serious complications from diabetes, such as kidney disease, blindness, and amputations.
Also, African Americans are twice as likely to die from diabetes compared to non-Hispanic
whites with diabetes (William et al., 2020). The purpose of my study is to discuss the risk
factors of African Americans and why they stand a higher risk of getting diabetes. Research done
by (Beckles et al., 2019) indicated that, compared with their white counterparts, African
American men are 20% to 50% more likely and African American women more than 100% more
