Preventing Substance Abuse
How many tragedies have you heard about that were connected to substance abuse?
There is a drug epidemic in America that we need to stop, now. Substance abuse is one of the
leading health indicators for healthy people 2020. We need to educate our peers about the
dangers of substance abuse by starting with adolescents. In this essay, I am going to explain to
you the health promotion plan I feel that would make a difference in ending the substance abuse
epidemic to better improve the health of our nation.
Target Population
You may ask, why start with adolescents? According to Das, Salam, Arshad, Finkelstein,
and Bhutta (2016), many unhealthy behaviors often begin during adolescence and represent
major public health challenges. Adolescents age range is from 10-19, and during this period they
are in search of their identity. This is the period they like to explore and can become rebels, so it
is vital to educate and inform adolescents about substance abuse to help prevent them from
making irresponsible decisions. Civilians are abusing substances all over the world causing harm
on themselves. It spreads all over a country, from nation to nation; to the entire globe, infecting
every civilized society irrespective of caste, creed, culture and the geographical location.
