Among Asian American Women
Mental health is a vital aspect throughout a person's lifespan. It affects the way an
individual thinks, feels and act—which helps the individual determine if he or she has the ability
to cope with stress, maintain interpersonal relationships, and make sensible decisions. Healthy
People 2020 have numerous strategies to improve mental health. In order to prevent mental
disorders and promote mental health, Healthy People 2020 suggests that using the appropriate
and quality mental health care will improve mental health (Office of Disease Prevention and
Health Promotion [ODPHP], 2017).
This paper will focus on discussing strategies to prevent and lessen the cause of mental
disorders among Asian American females between the ages of 18 to 24; moreover, the leading
cause of suicide. By doing this, several articles will be integrated throughout this paper
supporting the general goal. The purpose being to promote and provide evidential facts to care
for young Asian American women and the preventive formatics for an optimal mental health
care.
Description of Asian American Culture
The Asian American culture is defined as collectivism—which the Asian culture
surrounds themselves with the importance of the family’s goal and needs over personal goals and
desires. The Asian American culture standards are self-dependency and interdependence among
their family members. Therefore, Asian American immigrants, second-generation Asian
American children of an immigrated families, and third generation families are unlikely to
express personal problems or mental health issues. Conveying emotion is a sign of weakness
and is exceptionally frowned upon. Many Asian Americans do not seek treatment because of this
